New Garage And Shop Construction
We build attached or detached garages and shops.
Have you been considering the addition of a new detached garage or shop on your property? A shop or garage can be used for much more than just parking your car. Your garage could become a workshop, a dry secure storage area, an art studio, somewhere to restore your classic car, boat storage, equipment storage, and more. Garages offer great flexibility to a homeowner, but if you’re going to build one, it’s a good idea to really be clear on what you’ll be using the new space for. You only want to build your garage once!

What You Need To Consider When Building A Shop Or Garage?
#1. How big will your new garage be? Do you want a single bay garage for a workshop or studio or do you want something big enough to store a couple of vehicles, ATV’s, a boat, tools, and more? Don’t make the mistake of building something you’ll quickly outgrow. It’s a good idea to consider building as big as you can afford as you can almost always use the additional square footage. Building onto an existing garage or shop further down the road will be more expensive than just building it right the first time around.
#2. What amenities will you want in your garage? If you’re going to have a workshop where you’ll be working on projects throughout the day then you might want to have amenities such as a bathroom and running water. It’s a pain in the butt if you have to constantly go back into your home to go to the bathroom or do something simple like wash your hands. What about a ventilation system if you’re going to be doing woodworking or metal working in your shop? Do you want heat in your garage? Without heat you won’t want to spend time in your garage when the weather is cold. Adding additional amenities will raise the cost of your construction project.
#3. Will you want cabinets, workbenches, secure storage? Some garages are just a big open space while others are more suited to specific tasks. Shelving and storage are always welcome additions, so are workbenches with cabinets for neat and organized storage. There are all kinds of garage storage options available and we can work with you to design a garage that will meet all of your needs.
#4. What will your electrical requirements be? If the garage is just going to be used for secure storage then you might not be too worried about the electrical requirements. Working lights and a few electrical outlets might be all that you require. However, if you’re going to be using the space as a workshop with stationary power tools, or even welding equipment then you’re going to want a sub-panel in the garage with upgraded electrical service (200 amp) to handle the additional electrical draw. You may need specific wiring installed and even specific outlets for your equipment. This is all less expensive to add during the initial construction than it is to add at a later date down the road.
#5. What about lighting systems? If your garage is going to be used as a workshop then you’ll want really good lighting. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to work on a project or a vehicle with poor lighting. There are many different lighting systems that can be installed into a garage and they are all relatively simple systems to install during the construction process but changing them at a later date can be more time consuming and expensive.
#6. Will you be building a suite above the garage? Some townships allow the construction of a secondary suite above or attached to an existing garage. This will usually mean plumbing and electrical work will be required and a separate entrance too. With demand for affordable rentals on the rise this is also a way for a homeowner to help pay for the construction of their new garage so it’s something worth considering.
